Jo Sharpe - The Artist

Artist Statement

I am an artist inspired by colour, pattern in nature and the natural world. My original works are inspired by scenes from my home county of Norfolk, my favourite coastal areas of Britain and local scenes from the beautiful Surrey surroundings where I currently live. My paintings illustrate my deep love of colour, surface pattern, texture and composition.
Mostly painting in oils but also loving to combine medias, creating rich textures. My range of contemporary botanical prints contrast to my oil paintings, but they also highlight my absolute passion for nature and love of colour and pattern. It is this collection is where my textiles design background comes into the foreground.

My studio is set in the beautiful and inspiring Oaks Park in the South London borough of Sutton on the border of North Surrey . Visits by appointment are welcome.

I studied printed textile design in Leeds (2:1 BA hons) and sold fashion prints world-wide. I gained further experience with the French furnishing company Nobilis.

Contract co-ordinator and Account Manager for World’s End Tiles.  Working with marketing directors, developers, architects and interior designers, designing schemes and managing own projects.

My Education

Jo Sharpe - The Art Teacher

I am a firm believer in the therapeutic and educational benefits of art for all ages and levels of ability. I am founder of Budding Artists, designing and delivering art classes for children and adults in Surrey. The adult art classes and workshops are held at my studio in Oaks Park. The children’s art classes are run as after school art clubs. The classes are diverse, developing skills with a wide range of media, subjects and techniques as well as learning from other artists.
I have also developed a STEAM club called CATS Club (Crafts, Art, Technology and Science) . I also teach this as an after school club for children. I love to show children the links between art, science, engineering often using Nature as an example.

Jo Sharpe - The Community Artist

In a climate where the arts is being squeezed I am passionate about working as an artist in the community. It can make such a big difference to our local communities. I believe Art is a great way to visually deliver a message and can be used an an engagement tool to make social change. I deliver community workshops in schools, libraries. pubs and parks.
Art can be such a great tool for visual communication at the same time as helping to making our local areas more vibrant and attractive. It is so good for our wellbeing.

Thoughts and Articles

Read some testimonials about Jo Sharpe.

I bought a couple of paintings from Jo Sharpe. She came to my house to discuss sizes and colours so that the artworks would go nicely with my colour schemes. I ended up buying a medium-sized still life and an oil painting of a tree from nearby Oaks park. Jo let me try the art on my walls before I decided to buy which was really helpful. I found Jo to be both professional and patient. Jo is currently working on a special commission for me for another room.

We really liked Jo's work, vibrant and contempory. When we expressed an interest in buying, she was very accomodating bringing some of her paintings to our home and was able to adapt her work to fit perfectly with our colour scheme and decoration. We are delighted with the finished work and would highly recommend Jo for beautiful and affordable paintings.

Hi Jo A very belated thank you for sending the painting off to me so quickly - I’m sorry it’s taken me so long to let you know it arrived safely. It is absolutely beautiful! I wish I could have afforded to buy the larger one too but am so happy that I have this one. I now have to decide where in my house to display it to its best advantage... I want everyone to see it and enjoy it too! Thank you so much and I hope very much to be able to buy some more pieces from you in the future. Best wishes
From the first meeting Jo was very amenable and responsive to providing an art lesson for 11, most of whom were self professed ‘non-artists’. Jo assured me that we would all leave with a recognisable portrait!! There was still some trepidation amongst the 11. Clear instructions were given, and we all proceeded to paint. The atmosphere was very relaxing and the process very calming and mindful, as well as being a lot of fun! At the end we were all pleasantly surprised at what we had managed to produce under Jo’s tutelage, one participant said, “it’s the best thing I’ve ever painted”. The morning finished with lunch in the café, perfect! We would definitely recommend Jo’s art lessons to anyone.
