The Golden Botanical Cornish Hedgerow Silk Scarf’s design is taken from Jo’s original Botanical print

Although I have been inspired by nature all my life and it was the theme for my degree show, these scarves are my latest creative project. It’s amazing how when you are in a creative whirl, and  I have been due to ‘lockdown’, one idea just naturally turns into another! Many of the designs for my scarfs are from my unique botanical prints. These are a series of digitally manipulated prints which show my love of nature as well as colour. Last year I tried out some of these designs as cushions and thought they looked great, and here I am now producing them as scarfs. This beautiful silk scarf was inspired by a Cornish hedgerow with a layer of clover at one end.

Textile Designer

Although I mostly work as an artist and teacher, I studied printed textile design at Bretton Hall College 1991-1994. Bretton Hall was an arts college set in the beautiful Yorkshire Sculpture Park and an affiliate of Leeds University. I sold my fashion fabrics designs to New York, London and Tokyo before working for the French textile house Nobilis in Chelsea, London. To be honest I found the nature of freelancing too difficult when trying to pay the high rents and it seems like a different life. Now, all these years later, having my studio and extra time in it during ‘lockdown’ the old ‘Jo’ is reappearing, creativity is flowing and I hopefully can make a living from my creative products this time round.

Quality

Have you ever noticed that the crafts of past generations seems so much more beautiful than today’s? You would be correct in doing so. Old buildings appear to be more beautiful, not necessarily because they were built in a period which appreciated tasteful architecture more than ours, though I would estimate this had an effect, but because the old buildings that we see today have been preserved, and preserved precisely for their beauty. The conclusion that I draw from this is that with beauty comes longevity, so my personal contribution is to make the most beautiful and high quality products not just to satisfy my buyers, though I sincerely hope that all of my buyers are satisfied with their purchases, but also as part of my own ethical mission to treat the environment with respect. Thus, I aim for my creations not to be worn once only to become food for the landfill, but to be objects of intrinsic beauty, made to be passed down and marvelled at by generations to come.
