Troubled Waters, Calm Seas

#CreativityforWellbeing

Jo Sharpe is a big advocate for being creative as Creativity is great for Wellbeing. Working as a freelance art teacher, she sees first-hand how doing art therapy is so good for you. She also knows it from her own experience in how it can help her.

During lockdown, both her poorly and elderly parents were in a care-home. It was so sad and stressful being unable to visit them. But also, due to the rules, they were often not able to see each other. It broke her heart. One day, after telling a friend the latest developments,  her blood was almost at boiling point. She reached for a plain large canvas and spilled out an explosion of mark making and created a black and white seascape. This happened several times and the seascapes now form part of her Free Spirits collection/exhibition.

Troubled Waters

A similar experience happened whilst teaching in her studio the other week.

She planned for her pupils to paint blossom trees for the lesson but after a morning walk in the wind and rain, she didn’t feel this was somehow appropriate so brought in a folder of turbulent seascape images by Turner to be inspired by as an alternative.

All her pupils decided it was a ‘troubled seascape’ day and they thoroughly enjoyed sloshing the paint around, creating colours and textures, not worrying about the final outcome.

One pupil who really did have a terrible morning (as she had been told late at night her daughter’s handbag had been stolen) created a turbulent sea and then decided she was feeling much calmer and created a calm sea ( all in the space of an hour and a half!)
